The Lord of The Rings is arguably one of the greatest epic works of fiction attempted by one man - J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien attempted to create the whole new world of the Middle earth and breathed life into a host of characters and civilizations inhabiting the world, ranging from the different humans, the tall, mystical long-eared Elves, the short stocky Dwarves as well as the evil Goblins and Trolls and other foul creatures.
The Hobbit, Tolkien's first book introduces readers to Middle-Earth, a world of masterful mystery. This book sets the stage for the Lord of The Rings, Tolkien's masterpiece.
Bringing the characters of Lord of The Rings to life in pewter is Royal Selangor and Dr. Graeme Anthony from Australia, whose designs and detailed sculptures vividly portray each unique character or setting. As at now, the Lord of The Rings range remains as the largest consisting of more than eighty items.
The range first started with the character goblets. The number of character goblets expanded throughout the years and have since become collectors' favorites among the avid Lord of The Ring's fans worldwide. One of the most stunning pieces is Galadriel, the fair Lady of Light. Her face rests on the palm of her hand which functions as the stem of the goblet. The cup is embellished with a piece of onyx, creating the impression of Galadriel wearing a crown, befitting her status as the Elven queen.
Further to the success of the character goblets, the shot glasses and wine glasses were introduced. The shot glasses not only can be used to serve drinks but quickly became collectors' items as well. One of the unique features of these pieces is the interesting way the pewter has been sculpted around certain glasses. The Orc glass is a perfect example of this feature. When a drink is poured into the glass, you can see the color of the drink through the eyes and mouth - an astonishing sight for the drinker! The shot glasses, once complete in sets can even be used as chess pieces by filling one side with a dark liqueur and the other with a lightly colored liqueur.
Similar to the shot glasses, the wine glasses are also a combination of glass and pewter. The glass cup sits comfortably in pewter sculpted to resemble the different characters. Using the same effect achieved in the shot glasses, the color of the wine can be seen through some parts of pewter, making them visually stunning.
Other additions to the range included tankards, toasting flutes and plates. The tankards feature one or two characters and include scenes that distinguish the characters from the others. The Gimli and Legolas tankard for example has three-dimensional likeness of stalwart Gimli and swift Legolas, the two unlikely companions together in a battle against orcs in the Chamber of Mazarbul. Behind them are the arches of the great halls of Moria built by dwarves mining for precious mithril.
From tankards to flutes, consider the selection of toasting flutes which center upon the Aragorn and Arwen romance. The Aragorn and Arwen toasting flutes have profiles of the characters decorating it and make a lovely pair. Their names are inscribed in elven runes on each flute. The five different designs of flutes were crafted to celebrate Arwen's Elven lineage and Aragorn's Numenorian heritage.
The set of four commemorative plates capture the many classic moments from The Hobbit, The Fellowship of The Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of The King respectively. This collection feature scenes such as the Battle of the Five Armies at the Lonely Mountain, the Council of Elrond in Rivendell, the Entmoot in Fangorn Forest and Eowyn's battle with the Witch King.
Also in the Lord of The Rings range are the limited edition sculptures and the chess sets. These magnificently crafted large sculptures are a must for enthusiasts everywhere. Limited to only 500 sets worldwide each; there have been six sculptures depicting different scenes and characters. Look out for the new sterling silver sculpture in late spring 2006.
For chess aficionados and fiction lovers, the War of the Rings chess set is truly a collector's item. The good side is sculpted in pewter while the evil side is copper-plated. Each piece is intricately sculpted and a game of chess will transport one into the heart of the battlefield between the forces of good and evil in Middle-earth.
